Exploring... Physical activity interventions for adults

Interventions to increase adults’ physical activity can take place in different environments. Physical environment, community, internet and workplace-based interventions are the areas that have been researched the most.

This fact sheet highlights the type of interventions that have been shown to be the most effective. This includes:

  • Environmental interventions - Introduce environmental policies that promote active travel, eg, reallocating road space.
  • Community interventions - Build partnerships with local government or non-government organisations to support physical activity projects.
  • Internet-based interventions - Enable communication, eg, chat/email, with healthcare providers or other patients.
  • Workplace interventions - Prompt employees to take the stairs rather than the lift.
